Townhouse Evening

Every window is lit. The tall stone townhouse rises three floors above the street, with neat sash windows in rows, chimneys on the roofline and a brick wall down one side. At the bottom, a black front door sits under a fanlight, the half-round window above the door. A lantern glows by the iron railings, a few steps lead down to a curving cobbled street, and a bare tree stands against a deep blue sky.

The painting is in oils, smooth and careful. Indigo, amber and warm stone are the three colours that hold it together, and the glow from inside makes the house feel lived in. Georgian is the name for this style of house: tall and flat-fronted, with rows of evenly spaced windows. This picture suits anyone who lives in a house like that or loves a city street at night. It works well in a dining room, a study or above a fireplace.

The tall version shows the chimneys at the top and the cobbles at the bottom. On canvas, metal and wood the wider shape keeps the middle floors, the lit door, the lantern and the tree. If you love lit windows, also see Home at Dusk.
